Counterculture and Marginality in Jards Macalé (Phonogram, 1972
Abstract
The article focuses on Jards Macalé's first and self-titled LP, released in 1972 by Phonogram. Through a track-by-track analysis, the album reveals countercultural practices, values, and experiences in Brazil during the "leaden years" (1969-1974), a period marked by the repression and censorship of the authoritarian state and, simultaneously, by the restructuring and consolidation of the cultural market. In its production, language, and concept, the album is equally revealing of a marginal, and therefore critical, stance towards aesthetic standards imposed by this market and conservative sociocultural standards reaffirmed in that context of military dictatorship.
