This essay examines the testimonies made by the character Sacha G., present in Materna doçura (“Maternal sweetness”) (1998), the Portuguese writer Possidônio Cachapa’s debut novel. Using Paul Ricoeur’s comments and reflections in his study Memory, History, Forgetting, the word testimony is brought to discussion. Drawing on several scholars from different fields of knowledge, Ricoeur develops a wide-ranging discussion of the relations between memory, history and forgetting, where the importance of phenomenology and sociology in the foundation of a historiographical epistemology is emphasized.
