Reading and remembering in Finnegans wake

In this article, I highlight aspects related to temporality in the last publication of the Irish modernist James Joyce (1882-1941), Finnegans wake (1939). A work famously circular in its structure and permeated by repetitions with variations, Finnegans wake exposes the fragility of remembrance mechanisms, demanding from those who read it an intense work of mnemonic attention whereas it also thematizes remembering as an activity in the narrative, concerning the characters themselves. Focusing on certain, especially from books I and III, I discuss the fact that narrative temporality reflects extra-literary discussions about time as a concept related to human psychic life. The central aspect investigated in this study of Finnegans Wake is, therefore, remembrance, as well as how it relates past and present.
