Culture, literature, nation: Comparative Literature and the promotion of nationalism
Abstract
This article delas with the relationship between Comparative Literature and
nationalism. First of all, it studies the building of national consciousness by means of the popular culture in the context of German Romanticism. Then, it analyses the formation of Nation state by the end of the 19th century, focusing on the role that literature plays in
the strenghthening of the collective idea of the nation and the production of patriotic feelings. In the end, the article shows how the works of Hutcheson Posnett and Joseph Text, two of the great names of comparative criticism, rely on the idea of nationalism to shape the field of Comparative Literature.
