Nationalisms in A lição de Prático (The Lesson of Practical Pig)
Abstract
Science Fiction is a literary genre which is known to investigate the problem
of otherness and the problems related to the encounter with different cultures, nations and
groups. Therefore, it constitutes an interesting object for investigation of questions related to the different forms of nationalism. A lição de Prático (The Lesson of Practical Pig) is a Brazilian science fiction published in 1998 by Mauricio Luz that discusses relevant geopolitical issues such as the internationalization of the Amazonia and the separation of the world into two blocks (rich and poor) of countries. In this work it was investigated some issues related to nationalism which are addressed in this book, such as the feeling of superiority, the desire for affirmation and also the marginalization and revolt involved in these processes. Clear extrapolations could be made regarding the neoliberal policies that dominated the country at the time of the publication of A lição de Prático (The Lesson of Practical Pig). Furthermore, the relationship between the real and the imaginary pointed out to aspirations of one generation or/and of the author in relation to society and the
future.
