Problematization of the definition of concept albums, and an attempt to apply it to the discography of Brazilian Popular Music
Abstract
Conceptual records definition have challenged theorists, although the idea of albums that are created with a clear intention of unity between their songs is something that seems evident. In this work, the problem is approached from a continuous model in which the records would range from loose to strict concept albums. In this way, the difficulties of a categorical definition are resolved without, however, closing the discussion. From this point onwards, the albums Canções praieiras (Dorival Caymmi, 1954), O povo canta (CPC, 1962) e Sociedade da Grã Ordem Kavernista (Raul Seixas, Sérgio Sampaio, Mirian Batucada and Edy Star, 1971) are analysed in an attempt to synthesize the methodology and possible solutions to the evident, but elusive, problem of this product of the cultural industry that is the concept album.
